Benny Borremans, Research Associate, USA/Belgium

Benny Borremans is a researcher based in San Diego, California.  His work applies a blend of theoretical and data-driven methods to identify the drivers behind infectious disease transmission in wildlife.  To reach this goal he develops and applies statistical and mechanistic models (often Bayesian), and he performs field work for data collection and an immersed understanding of the ecology of the study system.  His scope frequently expands to include work on wildlife conservation ecology in general.  Benny received his PhD from the University of Antwerp (Belgium) for his work on the transmission ecology of rodent-borne viruses in Tanzania, after which he pursued a postdoctoral position at UCLA with Jamie Lloyd-Smith on the transmission of leptospirosis in the Eastern Pacific ecosystem. He currently works as a contracted independent researcher.
